College of Marin Registered Nursing Department Procedure Advanced Placement in the Nursing Program for Military and LVNs LVN 30 Unit Option
Students with previous nursing education may apply for advanced placement and may be admitted if space in the program is available. This includes students who are transferring from other state approved pre-licensure Nursing Programs, students with medical military experience and California Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs). A 30-Unit Option is available for California LVNs that fulfills the California State Board of Registered Nursing requirements. (See Section 1429 of Title 16 – California Code of Regulations Nurse Practice Act.)
Students applying for advanced placement must meet all eligibility criteria for the Nursing Program. Eligibility requirements are outlined on the COM Nursing Education Webpage hs.marin.edu/nursing. Eligibility is determined using the Multicriteria Admission Spreadsheet. Candidates must complete the required prerequisites prior to applying. Candidates must take the TEAS as part of the admissions process and pass with a minimum cut score of 62%, or the most current minimum cut score). Students should be aware of and have a plan for completing corequisites. If the student fails the TEAS, there will be an opportunity for remediation; the student may apply again in the following admissions cycle.
Once the candidate is eligible for admission to the program; a HESI Nursing Fundamentals Proctored Exam (or equivalent) and a drug dosage calculation exam will be administered to determine program placement. Students must pass the exams with a score of 75% or higher or with a proficiency level 2. If these criteria are met, the student will be placed on the advanced placement waitlist.
All waitlisted candidates will meet with the Director of Nursing to determine advanced placement in the program and if it is appropriate for the student to enter in the second or third semester of our 4-semester nursing program.
Waitlisted candidates will be admitted on a space available basis only. Space is determined by the most current cap on COM RN Program student enrollment. At this writing, our nursing program enrollment is 43 students per cohort. Space is also limited by clinical placement availability. Advanced placement students must meet all nursing major requirements and general education requirements in order to receive the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing
Eligibility Criteria for Military (medical experience) Advance Placement
Military Personnel and Veterans may be eligible for advanced placement enrollment in the ADN Program based on education and experience. This includes, but is not limited to, Basic Medical Technician (Navy Hospital Corpsman), USAF Basic Medical Service Technician, and Army Medical Specialist.

1. Military Personnel and Veterans may request advanced placement in the nursing program during the application process if they have the following:
A. Honorable discharge (DD214) or current active honorable service (letter from supervisor).
B. Recency of education and experience within last five years prior to application
C. Served on active military duty in the Medical Corps of the United States under honorable conditions.
D. Meet the same eligibility requirement for admission into the ADN program as other applicants, including completion of prerequisites.
2. Application process policy and procedures are the same for the generic and military personnel/Veterans
A. Military records and transcripts will be reviewed by an evaluator and the applicant must have a DD214 showing completion of military coursework and service/discharge under honorable conditions.
B. Once you submit the application and have met the eligibility requirements, a HESI Nursing Fundamentals Proctored Exam (or equivalent) and a drug dosage calculation exam will be administered to determine program placement. Students must pass the exams with a score of 75% or higher or with a proficiency level 2. If these criteria are met, the student will be placed on the advanced placement waitlist.
C. We recommend you review Fundamentals of Nursing and drug dosage calculations prior to taking these tests. We will provide you with a current booklist and recommended study materials upon request.
D. Military Personnel and Veterans entering ADN program on Advanced Placement: All student policies and procedures apply.
LVN 30-Unit Option
A 30-Unit Option is available for California LVNs that fulfills the California State Board of Registered Nursing requirements. (See Section 1429 of Title 16 – California Code of Regulations Nurse Practice Act.) This option meets the Board of Registered Nursing criteria for applicants to sit for the NCLEX and achieve an RN license but does not result in an Associate’s Degree.
Admissions for the LVN 30-Unit Option are determined on qualifications and space availability. All potential applicants for the 30-Unit Option are counseled on an individual basis by the Director of the program. The 30-Unit Option applicant must file an application for the nursing program and submit appropriate documentation of eligibility to the college Admissions and Records Office. Evaluation of the transferability of prerequisite courses done at other colleges is done by the Admissions and Records Office using standard criteria. There are no requirements for how recent the prerequisite courses are for a 30-Unit Option.
Licensed Vocational Nurses wishing to meet Board of Registered Nursing requirements only must complete 18.5 semester units of nursing courses and ten semester units of science courses including physiology and microbiology. Contact the nursing office for procedural details.

A. Applicants must meet and fulfill all requirements for admission to the nursing program, including completion of prerequisites. Eligibility is explained on the COM RN web page and in the multicriteria Admissions Spreadsheet
B. Space must be available in the program. Space is limited by clinical placement availability and the current cap on RN Program enrollment.
