Drug Screening and Background Screening Appeals Process

 

Purpose: 

To ensure the safety and integrity of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program in compliance with the Districts contracted clinical facilities. The drug screening and background screening policy for all students enrolled in the EMT program is as follows:

Drug Screening: 

  • Required: All students must undergo a drug screening prior to participating in the observational clinical experience. 
  • Testing: Drug screening will be conducted at one of the facilities approved by the college, locations provided to the students upon enrollment and onboarding. 
  • Positive Results: Students who test positive for any of the 10 listed substances will not be permitted to participate in the clinical experiences. 
    • Amphetamines 
    • Methamphetamine 
    • Barbiturates 
    • Benzodiazepines 
    • Cocaine metabolite  
    • Marijuana metabolites 
    • Methadone o Methaqualone 
    • Codeine/morphine 
    • Hydrocodone/hydromorphone 
    • Phencyclidine 
    • Propoxyphene 

The District has a commitment to providing its employees and students with a drug and alcohol-free workplace and campus environment. For reference, BP3550 and AP3550 are attached.

Background Screening: 

  • Required: All students must undergo a background check prior to enrollment in the program. 
  • Scope: The background check will include a 7-year criminal history check. 
  • Appeals Process: Students who have a background check that may disqualify them from participation in the program will be provided with an opportunity to appeal to the clinical facilities in collaboration with the Director of Allied Health.
