PREREQUISITES | |
| What are the prerequisites for Fire 112? | You must hold a current certification before the course starts. Any one of the following meets the requirement: • Fire 215 (Advanced First Aid/First Responder) at College of Marin • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course, plus current AHA BLS CPR (Adult/Child/Infant with AED for Healthcare Providers) • Current or previous EMT-1, EMT-2, or EMT-P. If expired, the instructor will decide whether you need a full recertification or additional hours. |
| Can I take EMT without taking EMR? | No. EMR provides the baseline knowledge and skills you need to succeed in EMT. |
| Which CPR certification do I need? | Completed Fire 215 (EMR) the semester before EMT? You’ve already met this requirement. Otherwise, you need an American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) BLS Provider card: • Printed card: submit the front and back. The back must be signed. • AHA eCard: no signature needed. • Must stay current all semester. If it expires mid-semester, submit your renewal before the expiration date. |

| What are the tuberculosis (TB) requirements? | Submit results dated within the last 3 months: • QuantiFERON-TB Gold blood test: one blood draw; results are emailed to you. |
| What is a titer? | A titer is a blood test that measures antibodies to show whether you are immune to a disease. • Positive (above the reference value): you are immune. • Negative or equivocal: you need to be vaccinated. Submit the lab’s Titer Lab Report. It must show the test type, exact values, a signature, and the date. |
| What does the drug screening test for? | It is a 10-panel urine test for amphetamine, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana (THC), methadone, methaqualone, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), and propoxyphene. Note: Marijuana is legal in California but not under federal law, and all medical agencies follow federal regulations. |

| What if I don’t have insurance or can’t see my doctor before the deadline? | Schedule boosters, titers, physicals, and testing as soon as possible. Carbon Health offers all services and at a discounted rate for College of Marin students. They have several locations around the bay area. Marin Community Clinics is another option for those that do not have insurance. They have several locations, Novato, San Rafael and Larkspur.
